Homework Philosophy
Classroom Homework Policy
Why do I assign homework?
I believe homework is very important, because it is a valuable tool in helping students make the most of their experience in school. Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits.
When will homework be assigned?
In most cases, homework will be given Monday through Thursday. If your child doesn't receive a specific assignment for that night, your child is expected to review math facts, study vocabulary words, and read. The homework includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Any unfinished class work will be considered homework as well. The students will also have projects as homework at various times throughout the year. All homework is to be completed in pencil unless the instructions say otherwise.
What are your child's homework responsibilities?
I expect students to put forth their best effort on each homework assignment. I expect homework to be neat, not sloppy. Homework is to be completely finished by the start of school the morning it is due. Students who do not turn in their homework assignment on the due date, will spend lunch recess or "Fun Friday" (details about Fun Friday is explained below) completing the work. Your child will have up to the following Friday to complete and turn in his/her homework. If it is not turned in, your child will receive zero credit for the work. This will affect the student's overall grade. Parents will be contacted if homework is consistently uncompleted.
What are a parent's homework responsibilities?
Parents should go over the homework with their child and assist where needed. I will not grade the homework assignments (unless it is a specific project or unfinished class work), as I will assume that you and your child went over it together. I will, however, mark the homework assignment with a check or a star to show that your child has received credit for completing the work. This credit will count towards your child's overall grade. If your child is struggling with a particular concept, please feel free to contact me.
Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore, I ask that you:
-
Make homework a top priority
-
Provide a quiet environment where homework can be done
-
Set aside a specific time for homework
-
Give plenty of praise and support to your child for doing their homework.
-
Do not bring in your child's homework if they forget - part of homework is learning responsibility.
What about legitimate reasons for a student not completing a homework assignment?
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is unable to finish the assignment, please send a note to me on the date the homework is due stating the reason it was not completed. The parent must sign the note. Students who are absent will have the same number of days to complete any missing work as the number of absent days. Homework and class work for all absences, including vacations, will be provided when the student returns to school.
Fun Friday
Each Friday during the last 30 minutes of the school day the students will participate in Fun Friday. This is a fun free time, where the students play board games, draw, read, etc.
Please note that this is a privilege and an earned reward for students who have demonstrated good behavior and have completed all class work and homework assignments throughout the week.
Students who have not turned in their assignments or who have made poor behavior choices will not participate in Fun Friday.
